DIE WINDMÜHLE SÜDHEMMERN
The stately windmill is visible from afar in the flat landscape on the outskirts of Südhemmern. The Wallholländer on an earthen wall with passage was built in 1880. Its brick tower is plastered on the weather side. The outbuildings with the old bakehouse fit harmoniously into the picturesque surroundings. Within the Westphalian Mill Route, the Südhemmern mill occupies a special place. It is the first windmill that could be presented to the public ready for operation in 1980 with new wings and a repaired wind rose system.
Interesting details of its history have been handed down. When the first windmill, a trestle windmill, was erected on this site in 1611, the ship millers of Minden are said to have strongly opposed this project. They justified this with the fact that the new building would lead to the weakening of the ship millers and "to the dismantling of their food". In the 19th century, the mill was equipped with one grist mill, one barley mill, one bag mill and one oil mill. In 1911, a steam engine was installed as an auxiliary drive, which was replaced by an electric motor in 1924. In the 1960s, repairs were due on a larger scale. The last miller decided to cease operations except for a small grist mill.
The windmill has since been restored and the bakehouse once again provides bread and cakes for visitors. A miller's house is also used as a village community center. A stable and a barn complete the ensemble. The Südhemmern windmill is the only one that can be reached by road, rail, the museum railroad (Specken stop) and by water via the Mittelland Canal. These favorable transport conditions have contributed to Südhemmern becoming the best-known mill site in the district.
