STORCH´S WINDMÜHLE EICKHORST

The windmill Eickhorst, also called Storcks mill, stands on an old mill site. In 1751, there was already a royal wooden trestle windmill and a horse mill here, which did the work when there was no wind. The old trestle windmill was a witness when on August 1, 1759 the historical "Battle of Minden" began here on the site with an artillery duel between the French and the allied troops. In 1842, the miller Karl Storck bought the old trestle windmill. He had it torn down and in 1848 built the Wallholländer with five grinding gears that exists today. The tower is made of quarry stone and plastered on the weather side. The rampart is made of the same quarry stone material. In 1903 a wind rose was installed. In order to be independent of the wind, from 1909 grinding was done by steam engine, later by diesel engine. After the general decline of the small mills, caused by the more efficient industrial mills, the last miller, Heinrich Storck, registered the commercial mill operation in 1968. After that, the mill only operated for its own needs and, as elsewhere with the mills, decay set in.

The new awareness of the mills led to the will to preserve the unique mill ensemble on this historic site. The renovation was particularly close to the heart of Hermann Hucke, the local curator of local history. Starting in 1978, restoration work began with the support of the mill construction yard and numerous local mill group helpers. The old bakehouse was renewed and an old half-timbered storehouse was removed and moved here. The care and maintenance of the site is in the hands of the Eickhorst mill group. On the milling and baking days, the members, now over forty people of all ages, entertain guests. The success is overwhelming. Since 1980, more than 100,000 people from all over the world have visited the Eickhorst Mill, as can be seen from the guest book.
