KOLTHOFFSCHE HOFMAHLMÜHLE

The Levern windmill with its hexagonal shingled tower structure was erected in 1922, i.e. relatively late, as a farm mill on the Kolthoff farm in Niedermehnen. It was intended to supply the homestead and was equipped with only one grinding gear. By the time it was built, most mills were already operating with motors and the Stert was also out of date, as most windmills in the district had already acquired the more modern wind rose at the turn of the 20th century. In this old form, the Hofmühle was operated with wind until 1958. In 1980, the municipality of Stemwede bought the mill and had it rebuilt near a farm. The Mühlenverein Levern e.V. spent many hours designing the mill ensemble, which was rebuilt in this way, and further expanded it over the years. In 1981 an old granary was built as an exhibition room and in 1984 a horse mill building became a recreation room for visitors. A bakehouse with a hundred-year-old oven on the neighboring Klostermann farm was restored so that visitors could be treated to bread and cakes. In 2008, the exhibition hall of the Old Machine Friends "From Grain to Bread" was inaugurated. The area was significantly expanded and a children's playground, a cottage garden and a parking lot were created. The area is lovingly maintained by the club members.

The Kolthoff farm mill is extremely popular with mill enthusiasts. To better accommodate visitors on grinding and stream days, another half-timbered house was added in 1986 and an open half-timbered shed in 1995. Groups of up to a hundred people can be entertained in the available rooms. People who want to get married have the possibility to get married in the horse mill.

The history of the mill

The construction of the windmill Levern took place in 1922. Here it was built on the Kolthoff farm to ensure supply through the mill. For the construction at that time rare hexagonal stones were used, which were set on a massive substructure, which consisted of quarry stones. The peculiarity of the mill was certainly the wide sail wings, which brought a diameter of about 15.2 meters. The mill was in operation until 1959, when it was closed down. It was not until 1980/81 that the entire mill was restored.

The special features

The restoration was carried out in such a way that the originality of the Kolthoff mill was preserved. This includes, for example, a functioning grist mill with a retrofitted bag box. But there is also a granary and a museum hall to give a small impression of how the Kolthoff mill was operated at that time. Already in the outside area you can see what awaits the visitor, because already here historical agricultural machines are presented, which are no longer to be seen today.
