The windmill Todtenhausen is one of the three still existing king mills in the Mühlenkreis. Its age is not exactly known, since a plaque with the date of construction is missing here. The Königsmühle Eilhausen (30), built around 1720, is the oldest Königsmühle, the Seelenfelder Königsmühle (5), built in 1731, is about the same age as the Großenheider Königsmühle. The Königsmühlen are characterized by the same construction features. For example, they were originally equipped with a stert to turn the blades into the wind. Another common feature is the slender tower with the narrow entrance.
After completion, the mill was leased out. The tenants changed frequently, as high taxes had to be paid to the state. In 1764 the mill was sold by auction. During the "French period" (1806-1813), the obligation to grind was abolished in 1808 and freedom of trade was introduced.
Since 1851 the Königsmühle Großenheide is connected with the name of the miller family Beckemeier. In 1924 Wilhelm Christian Beckemeier was born, who managed the mill business until 1954. In addition to farming, he drove the "Milchsammelexpress" for 35 years. Wilhelm Christian Beckemeier died in 2011 at the age of 87. Today, the mill is owned by his daughter.
