At the western edge of Hartum stands this stately Wallholländer since 1877. Its mighty tower is built of Bergkirchen sandstone. The once existing earth wall was later replaced by a brick first floor made of the same sandstone. Hartum is an ancient mill site, as a Bock windmill stood here as early as 1564, making it one of the oldest documented windmills in the district. After the old mill had become dilapidated, the new windmill was built in 1877. In the tower there is a plaque which, in addition to the name of the builder and the local councillors, bears the following inscription:
"God's mills grind slowly, but they grind very fine, what he misses with long-suffering, he catches up with sharpness everything".
The windmill was turned into the wind by means of a gaff wheel and a pull rope, but was replaced by a wind rose as early as 1896. In 1913 an electric motor was installed as an additional drive. After a wing broke off in a stormy night in 1942, the whole escape was dismantled and until 1967 the mill was only powered by engine, before the operation was stopped. The mill changed hands last year, is now private property and can be visited by appointment at weekends. The deciduous trees that long blocked the view of the mill have been felled.Coming from Südhemmern, the mill enthusiast can now recognize the stately Holländermühle on the outskirts of Hartum from afar.
