WINDMÜHLE GROẞENHEERSE
The tower of the windmill Großenheerse has a unique design in the Mühlenkreis and is a real specialty. The Dutch windmill was built in 1863 as an octagonal brick tower. Its corner pilaster strips, which extend to under the hood, are original. The mill stands on an earth wall with a passage. The wind-operated sail wings and the conspicuously wide stert for turning the hood are still in their original condition.
Inside the mill is the year 1863, which may be assumed as the year of construction. There is an interesting episode from this period of construction. On February 7, 1863, Karl Korte complained to the Minden District Office:
As early as October of last year, I applied to the office in Schlüsselburg for a commission to build a windmill, but I have been held up until today. Since I intend to undertake the construction in question in these days, I ask that the office in Schlüsselburg be induced to finally grant the commission.
The request has probably led to success. The complete equipment is still present and functional today. In the fifties of the last century, Korte stopped the operation of the mill, because a modernization of the mill would have been uneconomical. The mill association became the owner of the mill and renovated it along with the outbuildings together with a tenant. In the miller's house, the cozy café-restaurant "Zum letzten Streich" was created. The integrated hotel business is a contact point for all weary hikers and cyclists who travel along the Westphalian Mill Road to the right and left of the Weser.
