As early as 1721, an Arnold Plagge is named as miller in a Prussian inventory of mills. The name "Plaggen Mühle", which goes back to its owner, has survived to the present day. Since 1724 the name Ehlerding is connected with the mill.
About thirty years later, the mill building was erected in half-timbered construction with brick foundations. The water of the Puttkemühlenbach stream, which is dammed up above the mill, drives the overshot water wheel with a diameter of 3.3 meters and a width of 1.4 meters.
The mill operation was expanded by the installation of a saw frame and a circular saw in 1878. From 1910 onwards, the Ehlerding family operated a farm next to the mill, and the milling business had become a sideline. Until 1964, the business was continued on a small scale, partly as a rapeseed mill, and then abandoned. After 250 years, active mill operation ended here. In 1984, work began on restoring the mill complex. Committed members of the Döhren cultural community and the Ehlerding family made the main contribution to the construction of today's mill equipment in many hours of work. The Döhreners were supported by the Mühlenbauhof, which reinstalled a mill equipment from the Münsterland. The installation of the gearbox together with the adaptation to the existing drive is a special achievement. The upper drive of the two grinding gears is rarely found in this form in Germany.
The year 2006 brought another substantial extension of the "Plaggen Mühle". One could almost think that the old technical standard of 1878 had been restored. To the joy of the owners and all mill lovers, a small sawmill was found in Luhden near Bad Eilsen, which had a horizontal creel with which the mill could be completed. The sawmill is driven by the large water wheel via bevel drive and cardan shaft.
