ROSSMÜHLE RAHDEN

The horse mill in the museum yard Rahden stood in former times in Tonnenheide-Hahnenkamp. There it had been established around 1860, in order to take over the grinding operation of the Bockwindmühle existing at this place with calm wind. Typical for the formerly numerous horse mills is the square half-timbered building from the center of which the standing shaft projects, to which a pulling beam is attached. The draft animals are harnessed to this "Göpel" and run counterclockwise around the small mill house. The whole structure is reminiscent of grandma's coffee mill.

In addition to a grist mill, a bok mill with four stamps was primarily driven. The Rossmühle is part of the well-known Rahden museum farm. The centerpiece is the farmhouse of Richert and Anna Metika Balkman from Sielhorst from 1689, which was rebuilt between 1962 and 1966.

The farm also includes a granary, a bakehouse, a barn, a sheepfold, a draw well, and ancillary workshops such as a blacksmith's shop, a clog maker's shop, a cooperage, and a wheelwright's shop. All the buildings have been collected from the villages of the surrounding area and have been lovingly reconstructed here. The museum yard offers, besides the very popular grinding and baking days, where bread and cakes baked in the old stone oven are offered, the demonstration of old rural activities. Two permanent exhibitions are offered to the visitors: "Linen production" and "Peasant clothing". For school classes there are educational offers: "working with wool or flax", "baking buns in the old stone oven", "honey production in old times" and so on. Guided tours for groups are available by appointment. The museum courtyard is open daily (except Mondays) from March to October from 1 to 6 pm.
