The horse mill in Oberbauerschaft is a technical masterpiece created over 200 years ago and a cultural monument of the first order. Smaller horse mills are usually driven by animals running outside, but here the operation takes place inside, under "roof and shelf", so to speak.
The mill was built in 1797 on the Meyer zu Kniendorf farm, which was first mentioned in 1463, and is still in working order today. The main part of the mill is the octagonal half-timbered building standing on about 120 square meters of floor space. The walls filled with clay support the thatched tiled roof. Inside, the seven-meter high shaft stands centrally, on which sixteen struts support a crested wheel with a circumference of 32 meters. The large comb wheel, like all the gear parts made of wood, is the achievement of the master millwright Johann Heinrich Diekmann. He has left his name for posterity on a spoke of the göpelrad: "JohanHeinRichDiekMan Mühlen Meister Anno 1797".
In a small annex is the mill, the stamping mill for "Boken". A camshaft, which can be coupled to the large comb wheel via a stock wheel, lifts the tampers, which beat the flax softly. Horses are harnessed directly to the comb wheel. When flax was processed in the past, farmers often came to the Boken with their own draft animals. After years of idleness, the mill association restored the mill and got it running again in 1985. On special occasions such as the German Mill Day and the District Mill Day, it is put into operation with horses.
