The gallery hollander has a smooth octagonal tower whose corner pilasters extend to the gallery. The stately windmill with the graceful hood was built in 1878. In its well-kept condition it is a real feast for the eyes. The period of its active operation, however, lasted only sixty years. The structure, made of field-fired bricks, is very solidly built. In 1913, a hurricane-force storm destroyed the entire escape; from then on, wind milling was no longer possible.
Following the trend, the miller family converted the operation to motor power. The mill equipment was renewed and re-equipped. The mill, which had been modernized to this extent, ran until 1938, when the engine broke down due to excessive load. The miller then decided to give up the milling business because the operation had become unprofitable. Decades of decay passed before in 1975 it was considered to blow up the run-down eyesore. But the people of Tonnenheide were committed to preserving the mill, and thanks to their joint efforts it was possible to restore the mill to its former beauty. A meeting place was set up in the mill building, where civil weddings can also be performed since 1996, as the mill is now an "outpost" of the Rahden registry office. The mill has become the "wedding mill". Since 1996, more than 1000 couples have tied the knot in the "Wedding Mill" in Tonnenheide. At the beginning of 2000, a new half-timbered house was built in order to be able to cater to mill visitors and wedding parties on a larger scale. The city of Rahden offers the best conditions and great service. From a champagne reception to a wedding ball and a fancy weekend arrangement, everything is offered.
For visitors Tonnenheide holds further attractions ready. The 1981 upscale Great Stone of Tonnenheide in the district of Hahnenkamp (about 2 km) should definitely be visited, parking available. The Winkelmann asparagus farm with café, restaurant, country store and a blueberry plantation for self-picking awaits guests. Twenty rental bikes are available from April to August for visitors who arrive without their own bike and want to explore the beautiful surroundings by bike.
