KLOSTERMÜHLE LAHDE

The monastery mill Lahde is mentioned for the first time in 1292 in a document of the Marienkloster Lahde. In 1871 Carl Meyer became the owner of the monastery mill. The Meyer family has run the mill business for a long time in a changeful history. Combined wind and water mills like the one in Lahde are rare, the only parallel being the water and wind mill in Hüven in Emsland.

After a fire in the watermill, Meyer planned to build a windmill on top of the watermill building in 1876. In 1880 the Dutchman's mill with a high tower was completed. The existing grinding gears could now be operated alternately by either wind or water. Around 1900, one grinding chamber each with sifter was in operation for wheat and rye flour. In the 1930s, the wind drive was no longer functional and the monastery mill thus became a water mill again. The wooden water wheel was replaced by a turbine in 1955. In 1962, the milling of grain was completely abandoned and only industrial flour, e.g. from beans, was milled.

Karl Meyer, the grandson of the mill's builder, died in 1998 and the active milling family gave up milling after 700 years of mill history. The turbine that still exists is used today to generate electricity. Starting in 1980, the mill association restored the gallery, the hood with wings and the wind rose in a major project. Thus, the monastery mill has regained its former beauty. In 2008, a comprehensive external restoration was carried out. Inside, the complete furnishings are still present.

The descendants of the Meyer family are active in other professions. They open the mill daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and are happy to provide information about the present mill and its long history. The visitor should definitely take a look at the immediate surroundings of the mill with the old monastery church and the dairy farms. The complex of church, mill and the meierhöfe still offers an insight into the life of the people of a branch of the Loccum monastery in the 15th century.
